Headteacher Blog 9th September 2022

Each week we will be sharing good news stories, key information, and details of upcoming events.

This week we were delighted to welcome back our students after the summer break. They have looked smart, come ready to learn and have been enthusiastic to return. Thank you to all the families who have supported students to arrive on time, in correct uniform, with the right equipment and ready to learn.

After the sad news yesterday, our tutor lesson today started with a session dedicated to the extraordinary life of service of Queen Elizabeth.

Well done Year 12 for a brilliant week of attendance; Year 7 and 8 were very good too.

Year 10 and 11 students need to make a real effort next week not to miss a single session. Remember: Every day, every lesson, every minute, counts!

Highlights of the week

My personal highlights this week were:

  • welcoming our new Year 7 who have absolutely smashed it this week. Enjoying themselves, involving themselves in learning and determined to
  • Welcoming back so many of last year’s Y11 into Post 16.
  • Having the opportunity to visit so many lessons.

Good luck to the students in Y13 who after achieving great results this summer are off to universities across the country this week and next. Exciting times!

For those who left us Y11 and have started their apprenticeships: all the best as you begin your career!

Y11 News

It was fantastic to welcome back our exam year group, all looking very smart, well-equipped and ready for the challenges of their GCSEs. There was a great atmosphere in classrooms, Year 11 students were 100% focused on their studies, making every second count; around school and at social times they also recognised, being the oldest year group, that they are role models to the younger students, and they really have led by example.  The Y11 Team

Y8 News

Year 8 have made a brilliant start to the year. The year group are looking smart and are already achieving many stamps in all areas of the curriculum! Students are immersing themselves in their new reading scheme in English and the reading within lessons has been fantastic!

In more news, Yvie in Year 8 is now the Tai Kwando European Champion!

Yvie started Tai Kwando 2 and a half years ago. Her passion began when her friends invited her to join a class and that was it! She was hooked. Yvie competed in her first competition 3 months after starting. As a yellow striped belt holder, she received a gold in Sparing, silver in Team Patterns and Bronze in Single Patterns.

She continued to work hard and even during covid managed to follow the covid rules and train outside at Roberts Park 3 times a week.

In April this year she was due to go with Team England to Poland but unfortunately the Team pulled out because of the war. Two days before the competition Yvie and her Mum and Dad made the decision to go on their own. They booked the flights and arrived 2 days later. Yvie received gold in Single Patterns and silver in Sparing and is now the European Champion!

She is now a black belt and is a 'First Dan'. When Yvie reaches 13 years of age, she wishes to achieve her 2nd Dan.

Watch this space Yvie has a thirst for success and the determination to succeed! Y8 Team

Y9 News A fantastic first week back for Year 9, you have looked smart and attended well. I have seen fabulous learning in Languages - with all of you contributing in Spanish with fantastic accents! You have been bubbly and polite around school and look forward to the best year ever at Beckfoot Oakbank. Your tutors have praised you on your positive attitude and discussions in tutor time.  The Y9 Team.

Y10 News

The first week of GCSE study has been really productive for Year 10 students.  They have been working hard with their new teachers, experiencing lots of new courses and showing they are here to learn. Behaviour has been good with very few removals from lesson, and nearly all of the students have been here and on time every day.  Well done Year 10 on a great start to an important year.

In other news this week

This week’s Oracy article in the Tutor lesson has focussed on Sir Mo Farah and his extraordinary life being trafficked from Somaliland and bought into the UK illegally. Students have learned about how modern-day slavery is not a distant or remote phenomena.

Open Evening

For those of you with children currently  in year 5 or 6 Wednesday 21st September is our open evening for current Year 6 and Year 5 – further details are available on our website and invites on the way to our primary schools.
