Head of School Update

It’s hard to believe how quickly this term has flown by! Since we last connected, it has been an incredibly busy few weeks in school, and I wanted to share some highlights with you.

Year 9 Online Safety Workshop

This week, we welcomed Inside the Blue Line to speak with our Year 9 students about online safety. The session was engaging and thought-provoking, helping students understand how to stay safe and make responsible choices online. You’ll find a few photos below and more on our website.

Turner Prize Visirt

Our Year 10 students had the fantastic opportunity to visit the Turner Prize exhibition. Experiencing world-class art firsthand was inspiring for them and offered a glimpse into creativity at its very best. We hope this sparks ideas and ambition for their own artistic journeys.

Parents’ Evenings

We’ve already held two Parents’ Evenings this year, and both were exceptionally well attended—the best attendance we’ve ever seen! Thank you for your commitment and partnership in supporting your child’s learning.

Next week, we look forward to welcoming Year 11 families for their Parents’ Evening. This is a crucial opportunity as students prepare for their final exams, and we want to continue the fantastic trend of high attendance. Your involvement makes a real difference. Click here for guidance on how to book appointments.

Maintaining high standards

As we approach the festive season, excitement naturally builds—but it’s important that we finish the term strongly. High expectations and consistent routines help our classrooms function smoothly and ensure every student continues to learn effectively right up to the last day. Thank you for your support in reinforcing this message at home.

A quick reminder – we recently sent a letter home regarding two key expectations:

  • No mobile phones during the school day
  • No energy drinks on site

Please continue to remind your child about these rules. They are in place to support wellbeing and maintain a positive learning environment.

Looking ahead

We are going from strength to strength in school attendance thanks to your support.

Well done to all pupils with 100% attendance this week. Prize winners will be announced on Monday. A new attendance streak starts next week. Let’s see if all pupils can get 100%. Please continue to support your child in maintaining high attendance so they can make the most of every opportunity at Oakbank.

The next couple of weeks promise to be full of learning and celebration as we head toward the Christmas break. We’re looking forward to finishing the term on a high and giving everyone the much-deserved rest they’ve earned.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

Year Group News

Year 7 News

It was wonderful to meet so many of you on Parents Evening. It was great to hear all the positive comments and feedback to students. The year group are working hard in lessons, and it is a joy to be part of their journey through Oakbank.

One of our students has created a Positivity Tree within our HUB facilities, Atif has gone around teachers and students to get inspirational quotes. Lovely idea Atif.

Our attendance has dropped, and it would be great to improve the attendance as quickly as possible, so the students don’t miss out on much education. Keep working hard Year 7 and when it comes, have a great Christmas with family and friends.

Year 8 News

We recently hosted Parents Evening and it was wonderful to meet so many parents, especially as the weather conspired to make it rather wet and cold that night.  It was great to see so many children and parents smiling and discussing their Child’s needs directly with staff.  To repeat one of the key messages from that night, all children should be accessing homework via Educake, if your child is struggling to do this please get them to speak to one of the year team or drop in to the LRC on a lunch time where staff can support with password resets.

  • Educake can be accessed online: https://www.educake.co.uk/
  • select student login from the top right of the screen
  • log in using ‘sign in with Microsoft’
  • Your child’s username is their login to their school account with @beckfootoakbank.org added to the end of it and their password remains the same as their school account.

The next couple of weeks will be busy with end of term celebrations, as well as the usual school day activities. It is also a time of winter related illnesses, during this time we are encouraging children to attend every day to support their learning. Once more we are offering a prize draw open to all children who attend every day and we ask that you encourage your child to attend where possible, every day really does count towards their futures, and we want every child to experience the activities we have on offer.

Finally, news hot off the press – a number of year 8 boys have been involved in the Yorkshire Cup Rugby and won 22-4 against a team from Hull.  well done Ozzy D, Eli K, Harry M and Tyler S. Good luck from all of us for your next match on Monday!

Year 9 News

Parents Evening: Thursday 22nd January 2025 3.30pm to 6.30pm

We have had a busy few weeks with a great Cyber Blue light event which took place on site.  Drake Kenrick impressing staff and winning the Quiz competition.

A member of Year 9 helped win a recent football tournament: Aimee-Paige B played in the Yr 11 team and scored 3 goals/saved 3 shots which meant we were unbeaten in the tournament and won on goal difference which is a great achievement.

We also had a number of Yr 9 pupils represent school in the first group game of the Yorkshire cup against a team from Hull. We won 22-4 in the end and were a credit to our school.

We have had assemblies on Sleep, use of social media responsibly and democracy and will be starting to think of Options in the new year getting ready for GCSE.

We are encouraging pupils to ensure they can log onto the homework platform Educake which is an essential tool for helping the revise for tests and get ready for GCSEs next year.  Anyone having issues with this can call into the library after school to get help with logging on.

Year 10 News

Parents Evening:  Thursday 15th January 2025 3.30pm to 6.30pm

The Girls Football were extremely successful this month, we want to say a very special well done to Sophia B and Lacey-Lou K. They were unbeaten and won the tournament on goal difference! They all played their hearts out and won 2-0, 3-0 and then a 0-0 draw. Other schools commented on their resilience, how well they played as a team and how respectful they were to the opponents.

  • Educake can be accessed online: https://www.educake.co.uk/
  • select student login from the top right of the screen
  • log in using ‘sign in with Microsoft’

Many pupils in Year 10 successfully participated in a visit to Cartwright Hall to view the Turner Prize as part of a subject enrichment. It was commented around the maturity and high levels of engagements from the Year 10 pupils.

Year 11 News

Parents’ Evening & Sixth Form Open Evening: Thursday 11th December/6th form

It has been a busy term to date for Year 11, with Morning Mastery sessions occurring weekly, coursework deadlines, mock exams and extra revision sessions happening after school. The year group have responded well to the increased rigour of Year 11 and putting themselves in a positive position to finish the first term strongly. A large part of making the most of this year is ensuring every student is in as much as possible, continuing to aspire to 100% attendance. Every day is important to make sure subject knowledge gaps are minimised and to give each student the best opportunity of achieving their potential.

On the Thursday 11th December we have the Year 11 Parents Evening and Sixth Form Open Evening. The booking system is now live and appointments can be made through SchoolCloud. To find the link to book appointments, please go to the school website and a pop up will appear on the screen. Click on the link and it will take you to the login page. This is an opportunity for students to find out what they need to do in each subject to achieve their target grades and how family can support them on their journey over the next 6 months (there is not long left!). On the same evening, it will also be possible to find out more about the Sixth form and there will be a range of stands in the library for families to look at the courses on offer. To supplement this, each student is meeting with the schools’ careers advisor to discuss the next steps they would like to take at the end of this year and how they do this. This includes applying for Sixth forms in the local area, colleges and apprenticeships.

There has been more sporting success across the year group. The Year 11 boys won several rounds of the English Schools Cup, before going out to a strong team from Sherburn on penalties. The Year 11 Girls Football team has also just won a competition, going through undefeated and winning the final match on penalties. Well done to all involved.

Finally, we have our new Student Leaders in place for the Head of School leadership roles. After going through a written application and a video interview which was shared with the rest of the school, students voted for one of the eight candidates they would like to represent the student voice for the rest of the year.

Logan R and Noor K were voted into the roles, well done both of you!  The roles will involve supporting students and ensure students have a say in the next steps the school will take on the journey to being Remarkable.

Post 16 News

The Sixth Form Open Evening will take place on Thursday 11th December and our staff and current Sixth Form students are looking forward to welcoming prospective learners. We are excited to share the wide range of opportunities available to those who choose to continue their studies with us.

It has been a particularly busy and rewarding term for our Year 13 students who have successfully balanced their UCAS university applications, visits to open days, university interviews, their first set of mock exams, virtual work experience and even our weekly tutor quizzes (13NMI currently the champions). Their commitment and enthusiasm have been exceptional.

Well done to our EPQ students who successfully completed this additional qualification: Shanjeda C, Rehan A, Aniqa B, Raheesa M, Imaan UH and Alishbah

Our Year 12 students have also made an excellent start. Their charitable efforts this term have been especially impressive, raising over £500 for local cancer charities. We look forward to ending the term by continuing this positive spirit with a raffle and a Christmas accessory day in aid of Sue Ryder.

It was a pleasure to meet so many parents at last week’s Parents’ Evening. The positive feedback shared between staff and families’ highlights the strengths of our Sixth Form—particularly the high-quality teaching and the warm, supportive environment we strive to provide for every student.

CTMC News

The festive spirit has arrived at CTMC! Our students have been busy preparing for Christmas by putting up decorations and creating a warm, cheerful atmosphere across the provision. We are also pleased to announce that Year 11 CTMC Parents’ Evening appointments will take place in the main school. Parents can book their slots through School Cloud, with the opportunity to schedule a 20 minute meeting with Mrs Towler to discuss their child’s targets and progress so far this academic year.

In the classroom, learning has been in full swing. Year 10 students have been exploring the wonders of science by dissecting hearts, while Year 11 have been deepening their understanding of Romeo and Juliet. Year 9 have shown creativity in technology by designing their own monsters and are preparing for their English assessment based on Of Mice and Men. We are also delighted to welcome two new permanent Teaching Assistants to the CTMC team, strengthening our support for students and enhancing the provision.
