Students will develop critical reading skills so they can infer, interpret and evaluate meaning in the world. They will learn to manipulate written language and grammar for a variety of purposes, audiences and forms. Students will learn to become a confident speaker who can use grammar, structural and linguistic conventions and vocabulary for desired effects.
We want to ensure students develop a joy and love of literature to enhance their lives and wellbeing, while developing their own voice and identity through the exploration of characters and themes which reflect societies past and present from a range of cultures.

Formative assessment is used throughout the year to monitor pupil progress and further inform teaching and learning. End of unit assessments are also used to address any misconceptions.
We make links to careers in English, particularly when there are authors visiting, and about journalism when teaching non-fiction.
When preparing longer pieces of writing for spoken form, we make reference to the fact that writing and articulating accurately is important for many jobs, as is the structuring and organisation of essays and thoughts.
