Beckfoot Trust is an organisation that links a group of local Bradford schools together so that they can collectively improve the life chances for young people within their schools. Our aim is to create a group of truly remarkable schools each with a genuine comprehensive intake. They will be wonderful places for young people to learn and grow up in. We want to make a difference. We want to create something special.

The Yoto Carnegie Medal for Writing is awarded by children’s librarians for an outstanding book written in English for children and young people.

Every spring, CILIP invites reading groups in libraries, schools, homes…in fact, anywhere there are children and young people and books, to get involved with shadowing the Yoto Carnegie Awards.

The young people taking part are known as ‘shadowers’ as they ‘shadow’ the judging process for the Yoto Carnegie Medals; they read, discuss and review the books on each shortlist and vote for their favourites to win the Shadowers’ Choice Awards. The 2023 winner was "The Blue Book of Nebo" by Manon Steffan Ros.

At Beckfoot Oakbank our school library has a long history of inviting students to shadow the Awards and this year was no exception with a group of students from Year 7 to Year 10 working hard to read the shortlisted books, review them and finally voting for their favourite.

We have compiled their work into a magazine to showcase their efforts and are very proud of all their hard work! You can download a copy of the magazine via the link below.
