Beckfoot Trust is an organisation that links a group of local Bradford schools together so that they can collectively improve the life chances for young people within their schools. Our aim is to create a group of truly remarkable schools each with a genuine comprehensive intake. They will be wonderful places for young people to learn and grow up in. We want to make a difference. We want to create something special.

Changes to school day from September 2023

Improving Literacy for our students - Change to the School Day from September 2023

We want our students to have access to an ambitious well sequenced, well-planned curriculum so that they know more and remember more and to access this, their literacy has to be better.

Our School Day

The school day is currently 6hrs 20 mins 8.20am to 2.40pm which equates to 31.67 hours (31 hours 40 mins). As a school we want to do more to improve outcomes and tackle the literacy gaps our students have, so extending the school day would give us some additional time to do this. We asked you back in February about this and have been working in the background since then.

Our new model will add 10 minutes to each day.

We plan to start at 8.20am and finish each day at 2.50pm, increasing weekly provision to 32.5 hours.  There would no change for students in terms of start time but a later finish to the school day by 10 minutes.

What do we do with the extra 10 minutes a day?

We will extend the tutor period by 10 minutes so that we can develop our Right to Read programme. Planning is in place for the books to be covered by each year group and the resources required.

Additional information

Adding 10 minutes will mean a slight change to social times in school, break and lunch.

For those students who access the school bus service, the bus time will be amended to incorporate the change. Our after-school offer will continue.

We will be sharing this information with all students in the run up to the change through assemblies and tutor time and with our new families through our transition activities.

Updates will also be posted in our weekly blog, available on our website and messaged out to all families.

Please let us know if you have any questions on any of the above.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Hart
